MUMBAI, May 3: International Master (IM) Sharad Tilak of the Union Bank got the better of Central Bank rival Shamsul Hasan on better progressive score, after the two finished level on 7 points at the end of the ninth and final round, to win the LIC-sponsored International Rating Chess Championship at the Andheri Sports Complex here today.

IM Tilak, with an ELO rating of 2360, agreed to a quick draw with Satara’s Amardeep Bartakke (ELO 2210) while Hasan (ELO 2170) likewise drew with DA Andurkar (ELO 2230) of Reserve Bank.

Incidentally, all six players playing on the top three boards agreed for a draw in 5 or 6 moves.

Tilak was richer by Rs 6,000 while Hasan collected the runners-up prize of Rs 3,000.

Other final positions: 3. Amardeep Bartakke (6.5 pts), 4. D A Andurkar 6.5, 5. V N Ghate 6, 6. Ravi Bhave 6, 7. L P Khadilkar 6, 8. Rashmin Pulekar 6, 9. D Ravishankar 6, 10. Vispy Pardivala 5.5.

Four unrated players Mohan Naik, Ashish Thatte, Sushant Banerjee and Megh Mansatta attained Fide ELO rating through their performance in the event. Ketan Boricha was adjudged the best junior player.
