Robust growth in consumer non-durables sector has pushed up the index of industrial production (IIP) to 3.8 per cent in May as against 1.7 per cent in the corresponding month last year. According to the IIP estimates released by Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) on Friday, the biggest growth of 12.3 per cent was witnessed in the consumer non-durables sector during the month. Last year in May, this sector clocked a growth of only 1.4 per cent.On the positive side, manufacturing sector, which has a high weightage in the index, posted a growth of 3.7 per cent in May as compared to 1.8 per cent in the corresponding month last year. Mining sector growth rate moved up to 7 per cent during the month as against a negative of 0.5 per cent in May 2001.Power generation growth rate in May 2002, however, decelerated to 2.4 per cent from 3 per cent in the corresponding month last year. According to the use-based classification of the IIP, basic goods output in May increased to 4.7 per cent as against 1.3 per cent during the corresponding month last year.
