The visiting political delegation from India on Friday expressed solidarity with Nepal’s seven-party alliance fighting King Gyanendra’s rule, even as a senior Nepalese leader said the struggle for the restoration of democracy would be fought solely by the people of the kingdom.
However, said Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, the people of Nepal will also need the international community’s moral support, including that of India.
The Indian leaders, including the CPM’s Sitaram Yechury, the NCP’s DP Tripathi and the CPI’s D Raja, who are here on a three-day visit, responded by saying that the Indian people were with the people of Nepal in the kingdom’s ongoing pro-democracy movement.
Koirala also said that the Nepal’s seven principle political parties have been working to intensify the movement and that it was gaining momentum. During the meeting, both sides also stressed the need for strengthening party-to-party relations between the two countries to consolidate people-level relations.
Apart from Koirala, the delegation also met Nepal Communist Party-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress (Democratic) acting president Gopal Man Shrestha, Nepal Sadbhavana Party acting president Bharat Bimala Yadav, Janamorcha Nepal leader Himlal Puri and United Left Front chairman CP Mainali.
Yechury extended an invitation to the alliance leaders to visit India at their earliest. He also said the Indian leaders would raise the situation in Nepal with their parties at home. —PTI
