BANGALORE, MAY 1: The Indian captain for the Asia Cup cricket tournament to be played in Dhaka from May 28 to June 7 will be named in Mumbai on May 5.

Lele, who was here for the inauguration of the National Cricket Academy, said that the selection planned for Monday was postponed due to communication gap. There were doubts about the date of return of TA Sekar, one of the selectors, from Australia.

Though he returned on April 27 evening, he could not get in touch with selection committee chairman Chandu Borde. Hence, it was decided to have the selection on May 5.

India is scheduled to take on hosts Bangladesh on May 30.

Top stars for snooker tourney

CHENNAI: Top ranked cueists of the green baize game like former National champions Siddarth Rao, Antim Singh (Railways), Rafat Habib and Syed Habib are among the 32 players who will vie for honours in the invitation snooker tournament beginning here on May 3.

The tournament, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Billiards and Snooker Association (TNBSA) will be played on league cum knock out basis.

The 32 players will be divided into eight groups to played on round-robin league basis. The top two players from each group will qualify for the knockout phase, according to TNBSA sources.

The round robin league would be played under best of five frames, the semifinals best of nine and final best of 11 frames.

This tournament will be a sort of selection trials for the All India Invitation Masters Snooker Tournament to be conducted by the TNBSA in June end or early July.

The best 16 players from this tournament, four qualifiers and 12 outstation players, would figure in the masters tournament.

Mah are kabaddi champs

SHIRODA (Goa): Maharashtra emerged winners in both the men’s and women’s kabaddi, in the West Zone Kabaddi Championships jointly organised by Shiroda Youth Club and Goa Kabaddi Association under the auspices of Amateur Kabaddi Federation of india (AKFI) which concluded at Subhashchandra Bose Stadium Karai here on Sunday night.

Hosts Goa had to be content with the second place in both men and women events.

In the men’s finals played last night Maharastra defeated hosts Goa by 30-14 and in the women event Maharastra beat Goa 39-17. Maharastra’s Sachin Mhaskar and Varsha Bhosale were adjudged as best players in their respective categories.

West Zone women’s cricket

PANAJI: Six teams including reigning champions Indian Railways, runners-up Mumbai, Maharastra, Vidarbha, Gujarat and hosts Goa will vie for top honours in senior Women’s West Zone Cricket Championship organised by Goa Women’s Cricket Assocation (GWCA) which will get underway from Tuesday here.

The vice-president of GWCA Dr Jyotsna Nayak and General Secretary Shubhagi Sardessai told reporters here on Monday that two teams along with seeded Indian Railways will qualify for inter-zonal championship. The teams will participate in the five day championship and three matches will be played on league basis daily. The team finishing on top will emerge champions.

On the opening day on Tuesday hosts Goa will meet Maharastra, Mumbai will clash against Gujarat and Vidarbha will take on Railways.
