NEW DELHI, July 29: Home Minister L K Advani today said that the government would seriously deal with those within the country who were supporting the proxy war being waged by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

He told the Rajya Sabha in his reply to a debate on the killings of 16 Hindus in Doda by militants that India was confident of fighting the proxy war in Kashmir. But he clarified that a pro-active policy on Kashmir did not mean a policy of hot pursuit although such a course of action was not out of place when dealing with terrorists.

Advani stoutly rejected suggestions that India was also creating trouble in Pakistan just as that country was engaging in a proxy war with India. He said that the militants had shifted their focus from the Valley to the Jammu region. Clarifying that he had not said that incidents like these would not recur, he noted that the situation had changed for the better in the Valley for the first time this year. More and more tourists were visiting the Valley, he said.

The HomeMinister informed the House that the Union Home Secretary, the BSF Director General and the Additional Director General, Military Operations had rushed to the site of the massacre. While members in the Upper House debated the issue without scoring political points, parties in the Lok Sabha traded charges against each other.

While many Opposition MPs bayed for the Home Minister’s blood and sought his resignation, the ruling combine retaliated by blaming the Congress and other Opposition parties for the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
