NEW DELHI, MARCH 13: India will collaborate with the United States and Japan on basic fundamental research on brain, as part of its pioneering integrated brain research programme.

Two major international agreements were signed in October last year, with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in USA and Brain Science Centre in Japan, to develop joint programmes in basic research on brain, Dr Manju Sharma, secretary of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), said here.

At a function to launch "Brain Awareness Week 2000" Sharma said India is hoping to sign a third agreement with the United Kingdom "shortly".

The function was inaugurated by Science Minister Murli Manohar Joshi.

India, one of the first countries to launch an integrated programme for both prevention and treatment of brain disorders, is also planning to rope in Indian scientists from the US and Japan for the programme that is being coordinated with the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) here.

NBRC will have its functioning laboratories within 18 months, Sharma said. Experts have already made a beginning by trying to create a pool of trained specialists in the field through introduction of post-graduate and post-doctoral courses in neurosciences. They are also setting up a database on the pattern of brain diseases in the country.
