India ranked among top auto, textile producers

The International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics 2008 released by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on Monday shows that India is matching the production of the world’s developing nations. The Yearbook’s purpose is to provide statistical indicators to facilitate international comparisons relating to the manufacturing sector.

Steering its way to 12th spot

India was ranked as the 12th largest automobile producing country. India was also ranked fourth in the developing countries’ category of automakers, ahead of several other large emerging economies such as Brazil, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

The top 15 countries, in the order of their rankings, were Japan, the US, Germany, Mexico, France, Republic of Korea, the UK, Canada, Spain, Iran, Sweden, India, Brazil, Italy and Indonesia. The three auto-producing developing countries, which ranked above India, were Mexico, Republic of Korea and Iran.

India is also the fifth largest producer of textiles. The countries ranked above India are China, the US, Italy and Japan. India has also been ranked ahead of other large developing countries such as Mexico (sixth), Thailand (seventh), Indonesia (eighth) and Brazil (thirteenth)

The other categories in which India ranks amongst the top 15 manufacturers are chemicals and chemical products, electrical machinery and apparatus, basic metals (iron and steel, non-ferrous metals etc), coke, refined petroleum products, nuclear fuel, non-metallic mineral products (glass and glass products, cement, lime and plaster, ceramic products etc), machinery and equipment, leather, leather products and footwear and textiles.
