The coming month has India and Pakistan set to enter yet another phase of hectic official visiting, starting with the next round of expert-level talks on nuclear confidence-building measures, scheduled for August 5-6 in New Delhi.
Following this, on August 8, is a meeting on conventional CBMs, with both sides reviewing the progress made in the two previous rounds on nuclear CBMs. The Pakistani delegation will be led by Foreign Office Additional Secretary Tariq Osman Hyder.
Given the healthy course of the last round of meetings in Islamabad, both countries have expressed the desire to continue deepening the elaboration and implementation of nuclear CBMs.
Conventional CBMs, however, have not fared as well. India has already forwarded nine military-to-military related CBMs, including a draft agreement on peace and tranquillity along the LoC, but Pakistan’s response has not been encouraging.
The two sides will also take up the draft agreement on pre-notifying ballistic missile flight tests. Differences on this score have been narrowed and both sides are keen to work towards its settlement. After their April meeting here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had both directed their respective officials to expedite the signing of this agreement.
This apart, talks on promoting friendly exchanges between the culture secretaries from both sides are slated for June 27 in Islamabad.
