Underlining the importance of people-to-people contact between India and Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said though relations between the two countries were progressing well, there was need to ‘‘work together with honesty’’ to resolve outstanding issues.

Addressing a press conference at the end of a two-day trip to Himachal Pradesh, Singh also hinted at increasing the frequency of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus.

On Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s proposed roadmap to peace, he said: ‘‘We need to resolve these issues and work together with honesty.’’ Acknowledging there were hurdles, Singh said: ‘‘We are trying that the understanding and CBMs become stronger and people-to-people contact increases.’’

The PM said relations with Pakistan ‘‘are improving and our full and sincere endeavour will be to resolve all problems through talks.’’

To Islamabad’s proposal on self-governance in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the state ‘‘has a separate Constitution and our federal system has enough provisions for ensuring self-administration’’. He added that even international observers had certified the J&K elections free and fair.

Defence Secretary Ajai Vikram Singh was back in Delhi after talks with his Pakistani counterpart Lt Gen (retd) Tariq Wasim Ghazi. ‘‘I will find out from him how the talks went off,’’ said Singh.

On the home front, stressing that the Left was not coming in the way of the UPA’s economic reforms, Singh said, ‘‘We have a good relation with the Left despite certain differences.’’
