SHENYANG (CHINA), OCT 10: India made a splendid start to their Asian Team Chess Championship campaign with the men trounching Tajikistan 3.5-0.5 and the women overcoming Uzbekistan today. Swati Ghate lost to Kim Olga as the Indians had to be content with a 2-1 victory against the Uzbek women.
National `A’ champion Krishnan Sasikiran played an aggressive game with white pieces against Jamshed Isaev, who opted for Grunfeld Defence. On the second board, former National champion and double GM norm holder Abhijit Kunte made short work of Anvar Nanzarov to give India a 2-0 lead in the tournament being played on a nine-round all-play-all format.
But another ex-National champion and GM norm holder DV Prasad, the Indian captain, had to settle for a draw against Tajikistan’s Mamahdshoev.
GB Prakash completed the rout for India with a facile win over fourth board player Subrob Khamdamov.
In the women’s section, International Women Master (IWM) S Vijayalakshmi played a powerful game in the Nimzo Indian Defence todefeat Mamdova of Uzbekistan to give India a 1-0 lead. Safira Shanaz then won on the third board.
