With Table Mountain offering a terrific backdrop, the Indian team got back in touch with cricket at Newlands today after a two-day break following their win over Pakistan. And, as they did so, news trickled in that their opponents here on Friday will be Kenya.

Which, on the face of it, looks a safe bet but could turn out to be a tricky affair. For one, Kenya are coached by Sandeep Patil, who will doubtless exploit his keen knowledge of the Indian team to good effect. For another, Kenya have the tendency to pull off stunning upsets and will be looking to justify their presence in the Super Six.

India, too, have lost to Kenya on occasion, the last being at Port Elizabeth in 2001 during the Standard Bank triangular series in South Africa. Following that result, the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit sought videotapes of the match to ensure nothing underhand took place.

Today, though, the Indians stuck to physical workouts rather than skill training. Part of the excercise involved slaloming through poles — agility bars, LeRoux called them — stuck in the ground. Skipper Saurav Ganguly wasn’t that hot but the best, not surprisingly, was Mohammad Kaif.

The Indian batting line-up, hugely responsible for the win against Pakistan, had the day off. Sachin Tendulkar didn’t even the touch the bat. After the 98 against Pakistan the master batsmen just confined himself to bowling his bit of spin.
