Pakistan ace Wasim Akram is to take leave from playing to have a stint of tele-commentating and is to skip the May 28-June 7 Asia Cup tournament in Dhaka and the following tour of Sri Lanka, according to a website.

Akram, who reportedly will be commentating on TV during the five-Test series between hosts England and the West Indies this summer, has been quoted by the website as having said 8220;I am not the kind of person who plans ahead. When I get to the end, I will have six months away from cricket to spend with my little boy, and then see what happens8221;.

Demonstration at Eden

CALCUTTA: Members of Progressive Sports Lovers Association staged a demonstration in front of the office of Cricket Association of BengalCAB near the Eden Gardens protesting the recent mud-slinging over cricket betting.

The demonstrators, who jeered Manoj Prabhakar for having brought allegations against Kapil Dev, also demanded that an impartial probe be conducted to bring the truth to light and that there should be an end to the spate of allegations for the sake of Indian cricket.

Professionals should manage the game: Bhutia

NEW DELHI: Ace Indian striker Baichung Bhutia has said football in the country should be managed by professionals if the game is to develop. 8220;It is time football in the country is managed professionally by those who know the game,8221; he said in an interview to Doordarshan on Friday.

Bhutia who joined Bury FC last September said the structure and management of the game has to change if India is to make a mark in the international soccer arena, adding, India can learn a lot from the way football is run in England to make the game lucrative in the country.

Bhutia will return to England this summer for his second season with Bury with whom he has contract for three seasons and will join the Indian team whose tour of England starts next month.

NEW DELHI: The Oval, which hosted the first ever test match in England in 1879, is to host a very special cricket match on July 29th. At the personal invitation of former Prime Minister John Major, the President of Survey CCC, Sachin Tendulkar will captain an Asian Xci in a special 50 over one day match against a Rest of The World XI captained by Alec Stewart.

In a unique co-operation between the various National cricket boards around the world, the stars of the current major Asian teams, have agreed to come to London at the invitation of the ex-Prime Minister to help raise money for the magnificent redevelopment of one of the World8217;s most famous test grounds.

Gavaskar at NCA

BANGALORE: Legendary opening batsman Sunil Gavaskar spent a few hours with the boys in National Cricket Academy on Friday and offered them several tips to improve their techniques.

Gavaskar, who had studied the boys and noted down their shortcoming. He interacted with them individually and replied to their questions. It was a useful session, NCA director Hanumanth Singh said later.

Ganguly props up Lancashire

LONDON: Sourav Ganguly put Lancashire8217;s innings back on track after Durham8217;s England pace prospect Steve Harmison struck two early blows on the first day of their County Championship First division match on Thursday.

Harmison, who finished with four for 74 to enhance his test hopes, claimed the wickets of John Crawley and Andy Flintoff before the Indian left-hander steadied matters by posting 73. Leg-spinner Chris Schofield also chipped in with 50 to help the visitors to 263. At the close Durham had reached 60 for two.

Bombay North, Sangli in quarters

SOLAPUR: Holders Bombay North and Sangli scored easy wins against Satara and Jalgaon respectively to enter the quarter-finals of the 49th junior State inter-district basketball championship here on Friday. Bombay North beat Satara 53-13 and Sangli beat Jalgaon 59-9.

Randhawa struggles and slips to joint fourth spot

MACAU: Jyoti Randhawa struggled under overcast conditions and slipped to joint fourth spot after the second round of the Macau Open Golf tournament here on Friday. Randhawa managed a par-71 score for a two-day aggregate of five-under-par 137. Gaurav Ghei 69, 69 was four-under 138 on a joint eighth position while two other Indians 8211; Amandeep Johl and Harmeet Kahlon 8211; also made good progress.

Gibbs fined for breaking curfew

JOHANNESBURG: Herschelle Gibbs was fined 15,000 rand 700 on Friday for night-clubbing past the South African team8217;s curfew hour during last month8217;s home series against Australia. A United Cricket Board ucb disciplinary tribunal fined Gibbs 15,000 rand and suspended him for three international matches.
