Sachin Tendulkar named Coopers Player of Year

MUMBAI: One of the largest professional service firm in the world, London based Coopers and Lybrand has picked India8217;s Sachin Tendulkar as its international Test Player of the Year.

According to the information received here, former England captain Ted Dexter, as the chairman of the adjudication panel, picked Tendulkar ahead of other top contenders 8212; South African paceman Aland Donald and all-rounder Shaun Pollock, Australian One-day skipper Steve Waugh and Sri Lanka8217;s Arvinda de Silva.

Dexter, in his selection comments, said this year Tendulkar has been the batsman nobody wanted to bowl to. He took Shane Warne apart in India which illustrates his genius.

Mahindras beat PSEB to enter final

DHANBAD: Mahindra and Mahindra stormed into the final of the 1st All India Manindra Nath Mandal football tournament defeating Punjab State Electricity Board PSEB 3-1 here today.

Mahindras scored two goals in the first half. The winners were leading2-1 in first half. S Raja and R Kaubi scored for Mahindras.

Sethi joins Shandilya on top

Sethi defeated Shyam Jagtiani 2-1 and later ousted B Bhaskar 2-1 to notch up his fifth victory in six ties.

Yadav, Govekar set up title fight

BANGALORE: K K Yadav of Andhra Pradesh scored an exciting victory over J Joseph of Karnataka in fly weight category to set up the title fight with Vishwanath Govekar of Goa in the South Zone boxing championship here today. Yadav won 3-2 on split point decision while Govekar dominated the proceedings with a 4-1 verdict over N K Venu of Kerala.

SRFI names squad for World Junior

CHENNAI: The Squash Rackets Federation of India today announced a four memeber Indian team to participate in the tenth WorldJunior squash championship for men, to be held at Princeton in the United States of America from August 1 to 15.

Ritwik Bhattacharya, Rohan Juneja, Gaurav Juneja and Bikram Oberoi are the members of the team, while Parth Doshi has been named as the standby, according to federation secretary N Ramachandran. .
