
Vijay, Uzma selected for ITF tour
NEW DELHI: Davis Cup squad reserve Vijay Kannan and National grass court champ Uzma Khan have been selected by the Internatinal Tennis Federation for five premier tournaments starting June 16, 1998.
Their itinerary starts off with the LTA International Junior Championships, East Molesey. The folowing week, they will play either the Danish Junior tournament at Rungsted Kyat, Denmark or the LTA International Junior Championship, Roehampton, England.
Next comes the Wimbledon Junior Championships, for which both Uzma and Kannan are hoping for a main draw entry on the basis of the 200-odd points they have collected on the ITF circuit. In case they cannot make it, they will play the 42nd Orangina Van Keenen tournament at Castricum, Holland.
The last two weeks of their tour will be spent at the German Junior Open, Essen, Germany July 7-12 and finally the Swiss Junior tournament at Davos Platz, Switzerland July 14-19.
Bhupathi advances
NEWDELHI: Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles cruised into the second round of the German Open Super 9 defeating Fabio Maggi and Richard Fromberg 6-3, 6-4 at Hamburg. They now meet Alberto Berasategui of Spain No 93 and Fernon Wibier No 53. Leander Paes will be playing the singles qualifiers at the Italian Open this weekend.
Meanhwile, Prahlad Srinath stays at No 467 according to the latest ATP rankings while Syed Fazaluddin falls one slot to No 701.
Indian boys win
NEW DELHI: Parantap Chaturvedi and P. Vishal took the straight set route to a win against Malaysia in the World Junior tennis Competition at Jakarta, Indonesia. While P. Vishal beat Dennio Yahya 6-2, 6-1, Parantap Chaturvedi defeated Adam Jayo 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles, AR Anand Kumar and Parantap Chaturvedi took out Adam Jayn and Nikesh Singh 6-4. 6-4.
Meanwhile, the girls teams lost all their matches against China. Isha Lakhani lost to Zi Yian 2-6, 2-6 while Megha Vakharia went down fighting to Yan Zhang 2-6, 7-5, 6-77-9. In the doubles, Megha Wakharia and Lata Assudani lost to Zi Yan and Yan Zhang 2-6, 3-6.
