The sixth round of India-China special representative-level border negotiations began here on Monday on a cordial note with the two Asian giants attempting to conclude a ‘‘package’’ solution on the vexed boundary issue.

The talks between National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo began with an unscheduled informal meeting, which lasted for over 45 minutes. The formal delegation-level meeting began afterwards, also attended by Indian ambassador to China Nalin Surie and other senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, ‘‘We believe the two sides will be able to find a solution which is fair and reasonable and acceptable to both sides through equal consultation and mutual understanding and accommodation in the spirit of the political guiding principles.’’

The special representative mechanism to address the border issue was created during the June 2003 visit to China of then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The political guiding principles on the border issue were decided on during Chinese premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to India in April this year. —PTI
