The Chilla village in Mohali has an unusual distinction to its credit: residents here celebrate Diwali, a day after the festival. While the world celebrated Diwali on Tuesday, the villagers here were seen celebrating the same on Wednesday keeping in tune with an age-old tradition. The logic, as explained by the villagers, is rooted in history.
Several years ago on Diwali, narrated the folks, the animals in the village, who were tied in one place, ran away and the villagers had to go in search of them.
It was well past midnight when they returned with the animals and being fatigued and tired, the villagers decided to sleep first and celebrate Diwali on the following day.
Ever since, the village has been celebrating Diwali a day later, said a villager while speaking to Newsline.
