The Problem
• French Open champion Anastasia Myskina will quit Russia’s Federation Cup team if Maria Sharapova joins the squad next year, saying she did not like the Wimbledon champion’s father.
Myskina said her problem was with her 17-year-old countrywoman’s father and coach, Yuri. ‘‘I feel his (Yuri’s) behaviour is totally incorrect, simply rude. I don’t want to be around people like him,’’ Myskina said.
‘‘As far as Myskina’s statement is concerned, she’s in conflict with (Sharapova’s) father, not with Maria. Yes, her father is an emotional person. But in my team captain career, there have been many conflicts, so it’s my job to solve them,’’ team captain Shamil Tarpischev said.
The History
• Myskina won her first three match-ups with Sharapova this year until this month’s WTA Championships semi-finals in Los Angeles, after which Myskina accused Yuri of illegally coaching his daughter from the stands.
‘‘He was just yelling and screaming instructions to her, and I thought he just might jump right on the court at one point in the match,’’ Myskina said.
Sharapova would eventually be assessed a code violation for being coached by her father during the final she won against Serena Williams.
‘‘If she joins our team next season you won’t see me there for sure,’’ Myskina said. ‘‘I do not want to be on a team with people who do not respect me.’’
Myskina previously expressed a dislike for the Florida-based Sharapova at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow last month. Myskina added, ‘‘She is more American then Russian. She speaks Russian with a coarse accent.”
The Verdict
• Sharapova has never played for the team, and Russia’s most successful player this year with five titles was not invited because of her tight calendar, said Tarpischev. Tarpischev, however, said Sharapova had agreed to play for Russia next season.
But, as a clarification — which leaves a lot to the imagination — Tarpischev said that ‘‘those players who will be in better condition’’ will be selected for the team.
Myskina clinched Russia’s berth in this weekend’s Fed Cup final against Spain when she won her second singles against Austria yesterday. (AP)
