Search for Tyson opponent continues
LAS VEGAS: Scratch Buster Douglas from the list of possible opponents for Mike Tyson8217;s latest comeback bid. Despite reports to the contrary, Tyson8217;s promoter said on Monday that Douglas would not be Tyson8217;s opponent for his first fight since his release from a Maryland prison. That leaves Tyson still searching for an opponent for the scheduled October 2fight, with the list of possible fighters now apparently down to 33-year-old Orlin Norris and 30-year-old Zeljko Mavrovic of Croatia.
Canoe drowns former German coach
VIENNA: A former coach of Germany8217;s National canoeing team drowned in a rafting accident in Eastern Austria, the Austria Press Agency reported. Achim Engster, 41, died while rafting on the Isel River in Southern Austria near the village of Huben, 325 kilometres southwest of the capital, Vienna. Engster was reportedly a coach for the German slalom team at the 1992 Olympics. While Engster8217;s rafting partner went ashore after a few metres, saying the water was too forceful, Engster continued, according to police. His body was recovered two kilometres downstream.
Bubka to miss World Championships
KIEV: Pole vaulter Sergei Bubka, the only track and field athlete to win six straight gold medals at the World championships, will miss the event this year due to injury.
The 35-year-old Ukrainian, who set his world record of 6.14metres at Sestriere, Italy, in 1994, is still recovering from last year8217;s surgery on his Achilles tendon, said the coach of the Ukrainian track and field team, Valeriy Aleksandrov.
Cubans show support for Sotomayor
HAVANA: Shouting Soto, Soto,8217;, several hundred fans crowded outside high jump champion Javier Sotomayor8217;s home to show they believe government suggestions that he was framed for the positive drug test that cost him a Pan Am gold medal. The supporters included representatives of communist groups such as the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, a kind of ideological neighbourhood watch group.
Awate wins Classical Chess title
MUMBAI: Avinash Awate drew with G Balaji to win the Maharashtra Classical Chess tournament with 7.5 points today. Rashmin Pulekar, also with 7.5 points, tied with the winner after defeating Hemant Mandhare in the final round at the Bhosale Sports Complex, Andheri. Awate was declared winner on basis of better progressive scores in this tournamentorganised by the Bombay Chess Association.
