NEW DELHI, JULY 9: It is crucial to improve the functioning and management of public sector enterprises without further delay to be able to achieve the disinvestment target of Rs 10,000 crore this fiscal, says Standing Conference on Public Enterprises SCOPE chairman Udesh Kohli.
In an interview to UNI, Dr Kohli said it is important to improve the value of the shares that are to be disinvested. This can be done by restructuring these enterprises. The government has announced its disinvestment programme for the year to enable it to mop up Rs 10,000 crore.
quot;Let us get the best value. Let us first improve the functioning of these companies which are in national interest. I do not think that there will be any quarrel with that from any political party, quot; Dr Kohli said.
One of the important steps involved in restructuring is giving giving more functional autonomy to PSUs. This will mean judging by results and not by individual actions. quot;Hold people accountable for performance, quot; Dr Kohli remarked.
Dr Kohli said the chairman and managing director CMD should be held fully accountable for performance of a company. quot;I am very much for that. Hold the CMD accountable. But that means if they perform you reward them, facilitate them after they perform better, give them encouragement and incentives, if they do not perform throw them out. But more important is decision making, quot; Kohli said.
