Prof Qazi Ahmed Sayeed, the first Pakistani patient being treated at the Regional Cancer Centre here, is leaving for his hometown Karachi early tomorrow.Dr Paul Sebastian, who treated Sayeed, said today that his patient had recovered well after the surgery. ‘‘He had come with an extensive mouth cancer, with the tongue and floor of the mouth being affected. We have removed the cancer and reconstructed the tongue with a muscle flap from the chest. The rest of the treatment can be managed by the oncologists in Pakistan,’’ he said.Sayeed, who is chemistry professor at the Agha Khan University, was all praises for the professional attitude of the doctors at the RCC. ‘‘Many a times I have called on Dr Paul and Dr Nair in the evening, yet they would always come,’’ scribbled Sayeed, who still has problems with his speech. Doctors said that Sayeed would regain normal mobility of the tongue and would be able to swallow and speak in a few months.‘‘The short time that we spent here was beautiful and we hope to be back for a checkup in a year’s time,’’ said Sayeed’s son Mohsin who is a TV journalist in Pakistan. The family is flying back to Karachi via Colombo as India had snapped air services with Pakistan following the Dec 13 attack on Parliament. ‘‘We leave at 2.15 am in the morning and hope to reach home by 10.30 pm tomorrow,’’ said Amima, Sayeed’s daughter.
