Managing parking-lots is dangerous business. Contractor of the Gurdev parking lot in Sector 17 Davinder Singh learnt this the hard way. He was allegedly beaten up by gunmen of Punjab IG (Intelligence) Shashi Kant yesterday for asking the parking fee.

The gunmen also tried to forcibly take Davinder to the Phase 8 Police Station in Mohali. Chandigarh police, however, got both the parties to reach a compromise.

Incidentally, Kant’s promotion as ADGP is due in a couple of days. Trouble, say witnesses, began around noon yesterday as the IG’s Gypsy was entering the parking lot.

Davinder says that when he asked the driver to pay up, ‘‘the IG came out and started abusing me, asking how I could ask for money from him? He then called someone and asked to send his gunmen.’’ Witnesses say Davinder’s turban was removed and used to tie his hands as 10 gunmen hit his forehead and chest with rifle butts.
