
MUMBAI, AUG 18: Defending champions IES VN Sule (English) were well-placed to repeat their double success of last year, in the DSO (Mumbai City) Under-17 inter-school badminton tournament. Their girls strode into the finals with an emphatic 2-0 win over St Anne’s at Sachivalaya Gymkhana yesterday, while the boys prevailed 2-1 over Bombay Scottish. IES had won both the titles last year.
In the women’s festival conducted today, Ruia and SNDT were the only two teams to report, and Ruia defeated SNDT 2-0.

Boys (under-17) semi-finals: Antonio De Silva bt Balmohan Vidyamandir 2-0 (Sushil Sawant bt Alok Damle 15-4 15-5, Sushil/Cayton Athogis bt Satish Telvekar/Aditya Ambre 15-2 13-15 15-6); IES VN Sule bt Bombay Scottish 2-1 (Kailash Dalvi lost to Abhijit Phatarphekar 4-15 3-15, Aniket Limaye/Dalvi bt Saahil Sarang/Phatarphekar 15-13 18-16, Limaye bt Sarang 15-12 15-12).
Girls (under-17) semi-finals: IES VN Sule bt St Anne’s 2-0 (Shivani Mayekar bt S Mahera 11-2 11-0, Shivani/Aditi Kulkarni btK Gunjan/Srividya 15-1 15-4); SIES bt Balmohan Vidyamandir 2-0 (Dipti Nair bt Jahnavi Padgaokar 11-1 11-0, Dipti/Aparajita bt Amita/Sonal Amdekar 15-4 15-1).
Women’s festival: Ruia bt SNDT 2-0 (Shalaka Damle bt Jyoti Berde 11-0 11-0, Shalaka/Sambhavi Shivalkar bt Ashwini Joshi/Minal Raut 15-0 15-3).
Patwardhan top seed
Vikrant Patwardhan of Greater Mumbai District Association and Meenakshi Wagh of Thane District Association have been named as the men’s and women’s top seeds in the NSCI first State Selection Badminton Tournament to be held here from Thursday.
The four-day event carries a total prize money of Rs 50,000.

The second Badminton For You (BFY) Open Family Doubles badminton tournament will be held at the Cricket Club of India on September 5.
