KOYILANDY, April 20: Indian Bank, Chennai showed their class while demolishing Indian Army (Delhi) 15-8, 15-5, 15-12 in a round robin league match of the Pre-Federation Cup Volleyball Tournament here today.
Later, Kerala women drubbed a listless Madhya Pradesh 15-0, 15-1, 15-4. The Indian Army, who had internationals M T Premjith and B P Aman in their ranks, still failed to strike an effective combination and did not pose any serious threat to Indian Bank except in the final set.
Indian Bank, last year’s runners up, owed much to Manoharan for today’s thumping victory. His approach to the net, and a near-perfect take off, often proved nightmarish for the armymen. A string of feeble blocks erected by Aman and Suresh Babu made things easier for the lanky international.
The Chennai, side who clinched the first two sets without much fuss, were given a run for their money by their rivals in the third. Trailing at 0-4 at an early stage, and later at 8-13, the armymen bounced back to narrow down the lead at12-14, before losing.
In a lacklustre women’s match held yesterday night, Delhi trounced Madhya Pradesh 15-2, 15-1, 15-4.
RAILWAYS WIN: At Kanhangad, the formidable Indian Railways scored a facile 15-3, 15-1, 15-3 win over Tamil Nadu youth team in the women’s section of the pre-Federation Cup tournament today.
