The ‘‘whistle-blower’’ IAS officer has come under a cloud. The CBI today initiated action against suspended IAS officer Sanjeev Kumar who had filed a petition in Supreme Court, alleging irregularities in the appointment of teachers in Haryana.
After day-long raids in 16 places in and around Delhi, UP and Jharkhand, the CBI claimed to have collected evidence of the bureaucrat owning assets to the tune of Rs 2.42 crore, far above his known sources of income. The CBI has also said it is probing the ‘‘role’’ of Kumar in the Haryana recruitment case that he had taken to the apex court.
Kumar, however, continued his tirade against the CBI and said today’s action was meant to put a stop to the apex court handing over the Haryana scam probe to another agency.
‘‘The case is listed for hearing on the 21st and I was going to expose the dishonest manner in which the CBI has handled the case. Therefore the raids. I have no other option left but to withdraw my petition now,’’ he said.
Questioned about the evidence of unaccounted wealth, Kumar said he had Rs 50,000 in cash lying at home in view of the upcoming court hearing and that all investments in shares and stocks which have been tallied to his disproportionate income belonged to his friends.
The CBI, however, has a test on its hands as it has not been entirely successful in wrapping up other cases of disproportionate assets. The agency yesterday registered two regular cases against Kumar following directions from the SC.
While the first was the DA case, the second was a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act for alleged irregularities indulged in by Kumar in purchase of various items including posters and computer software when he was posted as state project director of the Haryana Prathmik Shiksha Pariyojana Parishad, Chandigarh. The purchases are listed under five heads in the FIR.
On the case of appointment of teachers, the CBI said investigations were at a final stage with one development — the name of the writ petitioner, Sanjeev Kumar, had been added by the agency in the list of suspects.
