As the stage is being set for talks between New Delhi and the Hurriyat Conference, the J-K government has quietly upgraded the security of senior Hurriyat leaders and the Intelligence Bureau has decided to provide them maximum security while they are in the Capital on January 22.

There is cause for concern: the Jamiat-ul Mujahideen today threatened to eliminate Hurriyat chairman Maulvi Abbas Ansari and his colleagues if they went ahead with the talks.

A Jamiat spokesman, quoting his senior commander General Mohammad Omar, told a local news agency that Ansari, Abdul Ghani Bhat and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq would be killed if they didn’t reverse their decision to talk to Advani. ‘‘These people are trying to repeat the mistakes (Indira-Sheikh accord) committed by Sheikh Mohmmad Abdullah. We will never allow that to happen,’’ the statement said.

Police officials told The Indian Express that tomorrow’s crucial Hurriyat meeting — where the composition of the team is on the agenda — would be held amid tight security. In fact, ever since Delhi’s dialogue announcement, additional security personnel are posted at the Rajbagh headquarters whenever the Hurriyat meets there.

While in Delhi, the team would be allowed to retain the proximate security given to them by the J-K government. ‘‘It will be strengthened by an outer security ring provided by security agencies in the Capital,’’ an official said.

Meanwhile, continuing their efforts to broadbase the opinion of all separatist parties before talking to New Delhi, the Ansari-led Hurriyat today sent an invitation to JKLF, the Jamat Islami and People’s League — three estranged parties who formed the seven-member executive council and remained neutral post-Hurriyat split — to participate in tomorrow’s meeting.

Sources, however, said the JKLF and Jamat have decided not to attend the meeting. JKLF supremo Yasin Malik today left the Valley to attend a seminar in Mumbai.

In the meantime, the group coordinating the talks for the Deputy PM is keeping an ‘‘open mind’’ about the dialogue. ‘‘We have not yet prepared any agenda. We are expecting the Hurriyat to send us some kind of an agenda after their executive meeting, and also the names of those who will be accompanying Ansari for the talks. We will probably prepare some kind of a response to what they send,’’ said an official.
