MUMBAI, MAY 23: A major fire engulfed about 100 scrap godowns and small industrial shops at the Motilal Nehru Nagar (Mohammed Estate) off Bandra-Kurla Link Road early this morning.
According to fire-brigade sources, the fire broke out at around 2 am and spread to the other godowns, mainly used to store scrap items like plastic, rubber, lubrication oil, metal scrap and discarded cloth.
Sources further added that 11 fire engines and five jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control at 6.30 am. Shamim Khan, a witness to the fire, told this newspaper that the gas welding works being carried out in the area late in the night could have led to the fire. “Some imflammable material must have caught fire during the gas cutting,” added Khan.
Sources said that an area of 1,000 sq ft was damaged in the fire. However, no casualty was reported. The cause of the fire is being ascertained, sources added.
