Humpy almost assured of boys U-12 title

AHMEDABAD, DECEMBER 22: Four Indians — P Harikrishna (5.5), K Humpy (6), Abhijit Gupta (5) and Mary Ann Gomes (5) and one Iranian Atousa Pour (5.5) lead their respective fields at the end of sixth round in the Asian Youth Chess Championship, 1999 being played here today. In the under-14 girls, Indian C Delphin and Giang Nguyen Thu of Vietnam shared the lead with five points each.

The top-seeded Harikrishna will take on third-seeded fellow countryman MR Venkatesh (5) in the boys u-14 tomorrow, and the winner will get an edge over the other for the title.

Harikrishna, playing with white pieces toda, began with Queen-Pawn opening against which Saptarshi Roy opted for Dutch Defence. The game witnessed a tactical battle and the top seed showed who is the boss on move 19….Bc4.In under-12 boys, top seed K Humpy has almost assured herself of the title. She now leads the field with a margin of one point and has already played against all known opponents.
