The Home Ministry’s Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Police Reforms has recommended that constables be given more powers and better weapons. It has said that the .303 rifles be replaced with modern rifles, and lathis with short batons.
The Committee has also recommended that more decision-making powers be given to constables.
To prevent frustration among constables, the Committee has suggested better promotion avenues. Each constable should have at least three promotions in his career, the panel noted.
The Committee also wants direct recruitments to head-constable and the assistant sub-inspector posts to be done away with. Other recommendations of the committee include replacing the Police Act of 1861.
