Rattled by the recent Ayodhya attack and London serial blasts, the Union Home Ministry today set in motion a ‘‘new mechanism’’ to deal with terrorism.

As a first step, Home Minister Shivraj Patil chaired a meeting to discuss the ‘‘new face of terror’’. He also reviewed the security situation, focusing on the Kolkata and New Delhi Metros.

The meeting was attended by Intelligence agencies, the Armed forces and Central paramilitary forces.

Sources said the initiative stems from the concerns voiced by Manmohan Singh over India’s increased threat perception.

Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said the “new mechanism being put in place’’ would help to chalk out a comprehensive strategy to deal with terrorism. He added that the Centre had noted that places other than the disturbed Northeastern states and Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly being targeted.

The Centre has asked the Central paramilitary forces, state police and Intelligence agencies to sensitise themselves and provide fresh assessment about threats and means to deal with them.
