Prakash Chaudhary scored a hat-trick to help defending champions Haryana edge out Orissa 3-2, while former champions Maharashtra began their campaign in style with an emphatic 5-1 win over Delhi in the women’s hockey event of the 32nd National Games here today.
Chaudhary displayed some amazing stickwork to score all the three goals in the first session within a space of eight minutes in a contest which initially seemed one-sided but came alive following a late charge from Orissa’s Pratima Tirkey who struck a brace.
In a one-sided second encounter of the day, Maharashtra rode on the skills of Papki Devi who scored a brace. Papki, who put her state ahead at the stroke of breather, pumped in the second soon after the break.
Services hold Bengal
Services sprung a surprise by holding favourites Bengal to a 1-1 draw while strong contenders Goa got past a spirited Maharashtra 2-0 in the men’s soccer group B league encounters.
Bengal squandered the chance to win the match after taking the lead in the first half as Services equalised through A Raghu Kumar 10 minutes before the hooter. Savio Alphonso and Kannan Priolkar found the target in the opening session to ensure full three points for the Goans.

Hosts Andhra Pradesh started their gold hunt in the National Games in style, winning both the men’s and women’s badminton team championships. While it was a hat-trick of titles for the Andhra women who beat a spirited Maharashtra 2-1, the men’s team made light of the absence of star shuttler Pullela Gopichand scoring a comfortable 3-1 win against Kerala in the finals.

Defending champions in men’s section Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in women’s are sitting pretty for semi-final berths scoring convincing victories in the volleyball events. Tamil Nadu scored their second consecutive win in the four-team league crushing Uttar Pradesh in a group ‘A’ match 25-12, 25-20, 25-15.
In the women’s section, Andhra Pradesh maintained their clean slate with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 win against Maharashtra in group ‘A’.
