Masterline Bakery Service, a division of Hindustan Lever Ltd, organised a cake decorating competition for all artisan bakers from Pune and bordering districts, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur and Aurangabad at Hotel Aurora Towers on Thursday.

The cake decorating competition was in fact held as a start-off point for the re-launch of one of their products, Golden Seal Margarine, an important ingredient in the baked goods segment. “Besides developing and nurturing the latent creativity of master bakers, the competition is also aimed at promoting cake as one of the key baked goods category and to create sufficient awareness for the millennium celebrations, during which time we believe millions of cakes will be baked,” said T Srihari, Sales Manger (All India).

The Golden Seal brand, which has been around since 20 years and is used chiefly in cakes and biscuits, is being promoted refocussed on in different parts of the country. “Masterline, the bakery division was started 10 years ago to serve the bakery industry exclusively. However, we seek to focus on a product of international quality, ” said V Prasanna, bakery manager based in Bangalore. Maloy Chakravorty, sales officer from Mumbai and organisers Rajesh Yadav, Ketan and Khimji Premji had come for the launch.

Cake decorating competitions have already been held in Kerela, Chennai, Hyderabad and now for he first time in Pune. Masterline plans to make this an annual feature. At the re-launch, bakers from all over the city were shown a video recording of the product and its utilisation in baking softer and moister cakes. The video clip explained the product’s use and benefits. A live demonstration was also given, besides introducing the bakers to other products of the company – Lily Margarine, Marvo Aerated Shortening, Silver Seal Margarine, Top Bake Gel and Fermipan and Activa Yeast, which are new entrants.

Some ground rules were set for the competition – the cakes were to be between two and five kgs and for the decorations, the bakers could only use “butter icing.” The cakes were judged on the basis of their eye appeal, colour combination, neatness and creative style. The winners who had their cake and ate it too were Husseny Bakery, Holiday Inn and Good Luck Bakery, in that order, for creating the most tempting cakes.

The judges were also chosen from related fields – Anjali Rege, professional cake decorator and teacher; A K Pusegaonkar, head of Bakery Department, Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (MSIHMCT), Shivajinagar, K Redey, HoD, Bakery, SNDT College and the chief guest was Vrinda Ganguly, Principal, MSIHMCT, who gave away eight prizes in all, including five consolation prizes.

Masterline has certainly adopted a novel approach in re-launching their product.
