In another success against militants operating in the city, police today claimed to have killed operational chief commander and military advisor of Hizbul Muhjahideen on the outskirts of Srinagar. The slain commander identified as Saif-ur-Rehman, a Pakistani national, had been instrumental in the recruitment of local youths to join as cadres.
DGP Gopal Sharma said that late last night an encounter took place between militants and the police at Palapora Safakadal. In the encounter an unidentified militant was killed and one AK rifle, four magazines, one wireless set and a hand grenade were recovered.
Sharma added: ‘‘The slain militant was later identified as Saif-ur-Rehman Bajwa, alias Fayaz alias engineer, resident of Rahimyaar Khan, Pakistan. The militant was presently acting as chief operational commander and military advisor of the Hizbul Mujahideen.’’
The DGP said the slain commander had been active in the state since 1992 and was involved in several attacks against security forces and civilians. ‘‘Rehman crossed the LoC in the early 90’s. After his elevation to the rank of military advisor, he started looking after the new recruitment drive for the Hizbul Mujahideen. He was also responsible for the launching and revival of the militants of his outfit,’’ the DGP said.
Meanwhile, four militants, including three Pakistanis, were killed in an encounter with the Rashtriya Rifles at Lolab in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.
