In yet another jolt to the Hizbul Mujahideen, security forces shot dead the outfit’s deputy chief commander Shakeel Ansari in an encounter in downtown Srinagar.
Official sources said today that Ansari was killed by the state police during a gunbattle last night in Soura locality of the city. He was a resident of Marmat in Doda district in Jammu division, they added.
Ansari is the second top Hizbul leader to have been killed by police in the past week. Last week, police killed Gazi Shahabudin, chief of the Hizbul Mujahideen, in an armed encounter.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, an Army soldier was killed and two policemen were injured when militants attacked two Army and police patrols in Poonch and Doda areas .Rebel violence in Kashmir has declined since the peace process began last year.
