JANUARY 16: Security has been beefed up in and around the government-run J J Hospital following a perceived threat to it by the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) or the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

On the specific instructions of the home department, an additional police force has been deployed at the hospital and barring the main gate, all the entry points have been closed with immediate effect.

“As per the directives, the premises of the hospital will no more be a thorough fare. We are recording the numbers of all the vehicles entering the hospital premises,” a senior official said, adding, an emergency high-level meeting of senior officials of the Grant medical college as well as police was held tonight at the J J Hospital to take stock of the situation.

“Following the reports that a section of the militants may infiltrate in the hospital premises, we drew a plan to tackle the situation,” the official added.

Since the arrest of four Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, who were planning to blow up the residence of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh headquarters at Nagpur, the Centre has asked the state government to be on maximum alert.

The government has also decided to set up a special control room in collaboration with the centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government in Mumbai.
