While some MPs are keenly making a case for allowing alcohol to be served on flights, a query posed by a frequent flyer to Deoband8217;s Darool Uloom seminary may call for some re-thinking on the issue. He wanted to know whether it was permissible for Muslims to travel on Kingfisher Airlines as the airline is funded and promoted by a brewery group. The query went on: Since Muslims are barred from consuming alcohol and engaging in operating an alcohol-related industry by religion, would travelling by a brewery-funded airline not put Muslims in an awkward religious position? The Darool Uloom, however, took a more liberal view. Seminary officials said non-Muslims are not barred from involvement in any alcohol-related industry and since the airline was being run by non-Muslims through income earned by alcohol-consuming non-Muslims, there was no reason why Muslims should not travel by the airline. Vijay Mallya can sigh in relief.
