MUMBAI, JANUARY 24: The Bombay High Court will hear on January 27 a public interest litigation (PIL) urging for withdrawal of an article that recently appeared on the front page of The Times of India allegedly focussing on indecent representation of women, particularly the Gandhi family.
The PIL, filed by advocate and MPCC general secretary Shekhar Shetty, was today mentioned before the bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabrahwal who posted the matter for hearing on January 27.
The PIL objected to the article titled Meri eyes bhi sexy, mera pout bhi sexy based on a web poll which named Indira Gandhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka as among the 100 sexy women of the last century.
Contending that the Gandhi family was held in high esteem by the masses, the PIL demanded that the newspaper should tender a public apology for carrying such an article which allegedly tarnished the image of eminent women.
The PIL further contended that the Union government and the state government should have taken action against the newspaper after such an article appeared therein.
Apart from the Centre and state government, other respondents to the petition are Bennet Coleman and Co (proprietor), Sam Dastoor (printer-publisher) and Dina Vakil (Mumbai editor), Dileep Padgaonkar (executive managing editor) and Ramesh Chandra (managing editor).
