MUMBAI, MARCH 14: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed that the Regional Medical Board of Satara will examine Udayanraje Bhonsle, former BJP minister of state for Revenue, who has complained of various ailments and has been lying in the Satara civil hospital ever since he was arrested on charges of killing a local leader. The directions of Justice T K Chandrashekhar Das came following grave reservations expressed by the State Government and the State police on the illness certificates issued by the civil hospital doctors on Bhonsle.
The court was deciding a bail application filed by Bhonsle, 13th descendent of Shivaji, on grounds of ill health. He has been held as main accused in the murder of local NCP leader, Sharad Levhe, who was murdered on September 11, 1999 during the state elections.
Bhonsle, has been complaining of various ailments in the hospital, including headache, fatigue and heart problems. Arguing for her client, advocate Anita Agarwal stated that there were no facilities available in the civil hospital, and that she wanted to take him to the Ruby Hall Clinic of Pune. She claimed that her client needed an angiography done since there was a problem with a right valve in his heart. Stiffly contesting her claims, additional advocate general P Janardhanan stated that all facilities could be made available to the accused in Sangli itself. The State police filed an affidavit where it was mentioned that Bhonsle had no problems the two days he was in police custody, neither was he in any intensive care in the civil hospital. Instead the police accused the civil surgeon of Satara Dr P V Jadhav of giving a false certificate to Bhonsle.
The court has now directed the regional medical board to complete the examination by March 22 and the next hearing of the case will now be on March 23.
