NEW DELHI, April 26: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Delhi Government and commissioner of police on a petition seeking to quash a notification issued earlier this month to ban sale of lottery tickets in the Capital.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Anil Dev Singh and A K Srivastava asked the respondents to file replies by April 28, the next date of hearing. The notices were issued on a writ petition filed by Akhil Bhartiya Sarkari lottery Vyapari Mahasangh. The ban notification issued by the commissioner of police on April 16 stated that selling of lottery tickets, both state and private, and the connected activities were likely to cause "disturbances of public tranquility and public morals, breach of peace and danger to human lives and property."

"All the lotteries including those authorised by the state as well as private lotteries also organised by the state have been wrongly and illegaly clubbed together and banned across the board," the sangh in its plea filed through advocate Arjun Pant said.
