LUCKNOW, JUNE 22: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister R P Gupta’s headaches never seem to end. Now members of the state IPS Association are up in arms over the suspension of the Unnao Superintendent of Police, Rajeev Sabbarwal.

More than 50 IPS officers, led by association president M C Dwivedi, went to Gupta’s residence late Wednesday night and gheraoed him demanding the withdrawal of the suspension order. Gupta told them that he would decide on the issue when he got “representations” from the association and the CM.

Today, these representations were turned in to the Home Department and are expected to be forwarded to the Chief Minister tonight.

The IPS Association unanimously approved a resolution expressing its concern over the Government’s decision to suspend “an upright and honest officer under undue pressure.” The SP was transferred on Sunday and suspended on Tuesday by the state Government on charges of “illegally detaining and manhandling” the family members of Additional Advocate General R K Singh at Hassanganj in Unnao during the first phase of panchayat elections on June 17.

Secretary of the IPS Association Manoj Kumar Singh said that the officers were not against the judicial inquiry ordered by the Government and also his transfer. “Our objection was to his suspension without an inquiry,” he said.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the Additional Advocate General said his family members were beaten up by the police under a conspiracy to defame his family. He alleged that instead of reining in his policemen, the SP too went “berserk” and slapped his brothers who are reputed advocates of the area and his nephews, he said.

“He even misbehaved with me when he went to the village to inquire about the incident,” he said adding that the officer refused to obey even the DGP and the IG. “If a responsible officer like Sabbarwal can behave like this with a senior Government official like me you can imagine the plight of the common man,” he said.

He said that he immediately contacted the DGP seeking immediate action. He also contacted Urban Development Minister Lalji Tandon and the chief minister. And it was then that an inquiry was ordered under the supervision of IG Karambir Singh and the SP was transferred and later suspended.
