Egypt, Dec 31: Two Egyptian policemen were killed in southern Egypt during a pursuit of two unidentified gunmen, Egypt’s state news agency said on Sunday.

The Middle East News Agency (MENA) said the shooting happened in the town of Assiut, 320 km South of Cairo, on Saturday while the policemen were chasing two men suspected of carrying arms. A third policeman was wounded.

The two gunmen escaped, MENA said, giving no details.

There was no immediate word on whether they belonged to Muslim militant groups which waged a 1992-97 armed struggle to topple President Hosni Mubarak’s government and set up a strict Islamic state. The militants, who were most active in the South, targeted policemen, senior officials and foreign tourists.

About 1,200 people, mostly militants and police, were killed in the violence, which halted after gunmen killed 58 foreign tourists and four Egyptians in a 1997 massacre in Luxor.
