The Gujarat Congress has asked VHP international general secretary Pravin Togadia to explain what his organisation did with the money collected for riot relief in the state.
Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Girish Parmar, in a statement, asked Togadia to give the details of the crores donated by the people. He claimed Togadia had promised Rs 1,000 every month for the riot victims along with food and and household items. Parmar criticised Togadia’s remarks against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and reminded how former CM Shankersinh Vaghela had arrested him and put in lock-up.
He asked CM Narendra Modi what prevented him from cracking down on anti-socials as he had promised while coming to power. The people of Gujarat, he said, will teach these leaders a lesson.
In Delhi, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre, Gujarat and the NHRC on a petition filed by Jnanpith award winner Mahashweta Devi and 29 other public personalities seeking reopening of relief camps for Gujarat riot victims and transfer of all riot-related cases to the CBI.
The bench issued notices and directed that the petition be tagged along with the one filed by danseuse Mallika Sarabhai on Gujarat riot issues.
The petitioners requested the court to direct the state to keep relief camps open till rehabilitation work was over.
Seeking transfer of all riot related criminal cases to the CBI, they pleaded that special fast track courts be set up to try the cases after submission of the chargesheet by the CBI.
