The government has decided to set up a network of assaying and hallmarking centres with the help of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the public sector, MMTC and the state governments, designed for testing the purity of gold in jewellery.

The Union consumer affairs secretary, Navin B Chawla in a release said more than 70 assaying and hallmarking centres are expected to be completed in an year’s time catering to 3 lakh jewellers in the country thus benefiting the consumers. The Centre has requested all state governments and UTs to set up such centres.
