The Air India management has decided to place under suspension 12 pilots after the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) refused to fly with cabin and cockpit crew who have recently been on flights to SARS-affected regions in the Far East.

The decision came after talks between A-I Chairman and Civil Aviation Secretary K. Roy Paul and the IPG failed.

‘‘We have no other option but to adopt this measure as we cannot allow any employee to hold the airline and the public to ransom,’’ A-I Director, Public Relations, Jitendra Bhargava said today.

Meanwhile, the Centre tonight decided to hire retired pilots on contract as part of a contingency plan in order to remove conveniences to air passengers.

A-I has also revised its schedule for 22 flights due to depart tomorrow and has served notices on more than 50 pilots, Bhargava said.
