To check rising inflation, which has become a political headache for it, the Government has plans to sell wheat from its stocks in the open market. Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters about such a move on the sidelines of a meeting of National Cooperative Development Corporation in the capital on Monday.Pawar said the wheat would be sold in the open market through state governments after meeting the requirements for the wheat under the PDS and other welfare schemes. The move comes soon after the Government recently decided to launch a scheme to distribute subsidised edible oil through PDS shops to help poorer sections of population from the rising prices. With record wheat procurement of over 22 million tonnes this year, the Government has ample stock this year to resort to open market sale.
