ROHTAK, Aug 14: Haryana governor Mahabir Prasad urged all affluent sections of society, voluntary organisations and administrators to extend their help to improving the lot of the physically and mentally handicapped persons, especially the female children residing in the slums and rural areas. He was speaking at a function organised by the district Red Cross Society in the premises of the Physically and Mentally Retarded Children’s Centre, here today.

The Governor said that the celebration of the golden jubilee of Independence would be meaningful only if we succeeded in bringing the disabled and mentally retarded persons in mainstream of the society.

The Governor also distributed seven tricycles, 28 clippers, 26 sewing machines and seven hearing-aids to the disabled.

He also launched three welfare projects worth Rs 40 lakh as part of the celebrations. The projects have been developed by the district Red Cross Society and the district Child Welfare Council.

He laid the foundation stone of a Red Cross building which would be constructed at a cost of Rs 30 lakh in an area of 1,500 square yards. The building will house a physiotherapy centre, a conference hall, rest house and an artificial limbs manufacturing centre which would provide numerous welfare services to the needy persons.

The Governor also inaugurated a skating rink built at a cost of over Rs 6 lakh in the premises of Bal Bhawan. Later, he handed over the keys of a new air-conditioned ambulance to the district Red Cross Society.

Deputy Commissioner Anil Kumar said that the district Red Cross Society and the district Child Welfare Council had rendered timely services to the needy persons. He said these organisations had distributed 54 sewing machines, 56 tricycles, 5 wheel-chairs and 16 hearing aids to the disabled last year.

Later, the Governor also inaugurated a new laser unit at Sri Baba Mastnath Charitable Eye Hospital and a Modern Sciences College in the Asthal Bohar Math campus, about 8 km from here. He also inaugurated a new boys hostel.Speaking on the occasion, the Governor complimented the managing body of the institution for successful operation of the institution.

The functions were also attended by Town and Country Planning Minister Seth Sri Kishan Dass, Lt Gen. O. P. Kaushik, Vice-Chancellor, M. D. University Rohtak, Rohtak Commissioner P. K. Chaudhary, Secretary to Haryana Governor Manik Sonawane, Deputy Inspector General of Police P. K. Mehta and other distinguished persons.
