A fracas over a property dispute took communal overtones in Godhra of Panchmahals district today, with two groups belonging to different communities indulging in stone pelting in the sensitive Juni post office area. At least four persons received injuries, police said.
Condition of one of the injured was reported to be serious and was hospitalised while others were provided first aid, police said.
The incident is said to have triggered in Pinjarvaad Naka area from a property dispute between Akbar Beg (the owner of the property) and his tenant Vijay Sindhi which has been going on for some time in Godhra courts.
Sindhi, a relative of city BJP leader Murali Moolchandani, who is also a witness in the Sabarmati Express case, had vacated the property for some time to get it renovated. In the meantime, Akbar’s brother Gaffar Beg, occupied the premises.
This evening, Sindhi, along with his supporters, tried to barge into the premises forcefully to reclaim it, resulting in scuffle between two groups which had gathered at the site. In the ensuing stone throwing four people were reportedly injured and one private vehicle was also damaged.
Panchamahals police chief Narsimha Kumar, informed that police reached the spot on time and brought the situation under control. ‘‘Its basically a personal matter between two parties. The situation is absolutely under control,’’ said Kumar.
Till reports last came in, cross FIRs had been lodged by the opposing groups in the town police station. The situation is reported to be under control and police has intensified patrolling in all areas, sources added.
