Political Drama in Goa

While Governor Lt Gen Retd J F R Jacob has turned on the music, Goa8217;s politicians are scurrying up and down lest they be caught without the right partner on polling day. Six months after they began passing their affections around through defection dramas the political gamesters are faced with the task of finalising alliances.

Unfortunately for many of them leaders and party organisations seem to have come detached from one another and are floating in different orbits. But it looks like several Congressmen, past and present, are destined to stay cut off from their moorings.

And, should Sonia Gandhi do an encore in Goa to deny tickets to several old faces like in Madhya Pradesh, the new assembly may see several rebels as Independents or representatives of regional parties.That sure is a recipe for further merry-go-rounders!

Governor-Raj

He may be pushing 80, but Goa8217;s Governor Lt Gen Retd JFG Jacob is following a schedule hectic enough to shame younger men andwomen. On his first day in the Secretariat, Government employees who walked well after opening hours were shocked to see the old man formally clad waiting to welcome them. Other changes include a clean-up of the Secretariat and quick disposal of files. No wonder the people prefer army rule to politicians!

Tailpiece

Churchill Alemao, former CM, MP and kingmaker, is only next to Laloo Prasad Yadav when it comes to the abuse of the English language. In a letter to fellow Congressmen he called them to back Sonia Gandhi as she was the 8220;pall-bearer8221; sic of secularism. Sports Journalists recall a TV interviewer quizzing Alemao about the prospects of Churchill Brothers, his football team. 8220;On what grounds, do you think, will your team win,8221; Alemao was asked. Glaring at the TV man, Alemao growled, 8220;On these grounds8221;, the Margao Fatorda field where his players were warming up. The joke is that Alemao once turned in a blank form to the Football Association in Goa when his team was supposed to play thenational league. Alemao insisted that he was only following instructions printed on the form. The first line read: 8220;To be filled in Capitals only!8221;
