Wild Pets
Actor Salman Khan and his father Salim by their exotic hobbies have turned the spotlight on pets in Goan homes. With Goan newspaper readers subjected to strong doses of the Wildlife Protection Act, several protected species are making their way to the forest department.
Since these animals are domesticated, they have lost their hunting instincts and can8217;t live in the wild.
The forest department is now thinking of issuing permits and licences to lovers of wildlife so that they can rear endangered animals at home.
8230;. And Pets in the Wild!
Goa, derived from the Marathi Gomantak8217;, is the home of cows, as the Konkan Railway Corporation is discovering.
Its high-speed trains snaking through the verdantfields of Goa have to contend with hundreds of susegad cows making themselves comfortable on the tracks. Naturally hit-and-run8217; incidents are common.
Now with the prospects of a derailment becoming a distant possibility, the KRC is turning its legal eagles on errant cattle-owners.
Last week, after the high-speed 18-bogie Mangala Express hit a cow on the tracks, a police complaint was field against its unknown owner.
With a cattle owner unlikely to claim a dead animal, the authorities are finding it difficult to nab the culprit. Perhaps it is time to seize the trespassers and auction them away in a cattle fair!
College Rags
It8217;s no fun being a collegian in Goa. Most college managements here insist on their students wearing uniforms to class. Educationists say students bunking lectures can easily be caught out. But then what do they make of groups of uniform-clad couples canoodling on Miramar beach? Mercifully, the madness is restricted to junior colleges.
Tailpiece
They might aswell put up barbed wire and machine guns to discourage smokers. But the starred hotels in Goa like their counterparts around the world have instituted a deceptively named programme called Courtesy of Choice8217;.
Under the scheme, separate tables are designated smoking8217; and non-smoking8217;. Now the smokers are seated in such a way that cigarette smoke does not affect non-smoking diners. What if there still are complaints? Will smokers be asked to eat in the kitchen with the help?
