DHAKA: Tension gripped the strike-hit hill town of Bandarban in south-eastern Bangladesh today after about 150 people, including 50 policemen, were injured in overnight clashes between police and processionists who were demanding more electricity for the town, residents said. Police used tear gas, lathicharge and later fired in the air after the processionists allegedly turned violent, resulting in the clashes.

LTTE attack

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s Tamil tiger rebels fired mortars at troops consolidating in the newly captured areas in the north of the island, military officials said today. The Army retaliated by firing mortar and artillery shells at known rebel positions in their northern Wanni heartland. There were no casualties among the troops, they said, adding it was not known if any rebels had been killed.
