SEVILLE, August 24: Russian star Alexander Popov grabbed his third gold medal of the European Championships here today, taking the 50 metres freestyle in 22.30 seconds ahead of surprise silver medallist Mark Foster of Britain, who clocked 22.53.

Australian-based Popov is competing in his first major championship since being stabbed by a water melon-seller in Moscow last August. But he has returned with a bang, having also won golds in the 4×100 metres freestyle relay and the 100 metres freestyle.

Romario injured

VALENCIA: Brazilian international soccer star Romario will miss up to two months of play with Spain’s Valencia after suffering a thigh muscle injury during a recent pre-season game, according to a published report.

The 31-year-old centre-forward who rejoined Valencia this month, is expected to miss at least seven weeks of the season after straining a thigh muscle while attempting an overhead kick during a match against his former club, Flamengo, the daily El Pais reported yesterday.

Johnson doubtful

CATANIA: Double Olympic champion Michael Johnson said today he wanted to run in a `Festival of Sprint’ at the World Student Games but his continuing injury problems appeared certain to prevent him doing so. Johnson said in a fax sent to the games organisers he was keen to race in the festival, scheduled for the last weekend of the Games on August 30-31.
